Capital of Maldives

The capital of Maldives is Male. The city is one of the smallest capitals in the world and home to nearly one third of the country’s population. It is located in Kaafu Atoll and is the centre of all commercial activities in the country. The name Male was taken from the Sanskrit word Mahaalay meaning home.

The history of Male dates back to as early as the 16th century. The Portuguese discovered this small city during this period. The whole city is divided into four parts, which are Henveiru, Galolhu, Maafannu and Machangolhi. One of the most densely populated cities in the world, Male is the center for all kinds of government and political activity in the country.

Male is a city filled with many tall buildings and sky scrapers. The roads are lined with shops and restaurants. You can find many palm trees lining the cobbled streets of the city. These add to the greenery and the city’s beauty. Male has no beaches. However, it is surrounded by a number of dikes. The city in general is extremely picturesque and has a pleasant look.

One can find many shops on the road selling almost everything that you can possibly think. Chaandhanee Magu is the best place to buy souvenirs and other gifts and traditional items. As for markets you can see the fish market and the local market.

There are many hotels and restaurants in this city where you can wine and dine in a relaxed atmosphere. Continental and intercontinental, as well as local dishes are available in these hotels. The main outlets to eat in the city include City Motel, Inn Classic, Extra Heaven and aquatic residence. Being a very small town, traffic is not at all difficult. You can walk or ride a bus, too. You can find many air-conditioned taxis here.

You may take a flight from the city of your departure and fly to Male. However, the airport is separated from the main city by an ocean. Therefore, we must take a ferry ride from the airport to the city continent.
