Fishing is one of the main industries of the country’s economy. In fact, fishing is the main occupation of most of the country's population. The government has taken a number of measures to develop this sector, such as the establishment of the Advisory Council on Fisheries in 1979.

Fishing in the Maldives is filled with fun and excitement. Tourists can take a "dhoni 'and go to many places of fishing, or simply sit on the beach and see fishermen take their boats in the middle of the Indian Ocean and return safely. The two mechanized vessels and fishing vessels are used in traditional fishing.

The best time to go fishing is during the early hours of morning. If the weather is good one can expect a good catch at this time of the day. Tourists can also go fishing at night. This type of fishing is very popular among tourists, especially those who are interested in adventure.

One can find other varieties of fish in the waters of Maldives. The most common varieties that are available include little tuna, dolphin fish, runner rainbow, Jack, trevally and barracudas.
